Wil's life changed forever the day his father's car flew off an embankment, but when his best childhood friend, Opal, lost her mother in practically the same way it only went from bad to worse.  Now it's four years later and Wil's mother has vanished, her bedroom mysteriously transformed into a place from another time. Wil and Opal must go back in time to stop a ruthless organization from erasing their families, but the past holds a conflict bigger than either of them had imagined. For Wil, it  would all be stressful enough if he didn't have a painful crush on Opal, but then nobody said turning fourteen was going to be easy.

'Wil Cicada's Backward Burn' is a time travel adventure about restoring family and friendships in the midst of cataclysmic events.

Andrew Boush grew up in Wisconsin and Hawaii loving science fiction and all things nerdy, and to this day has more pulp magazine covers, stickers, and figurines surrounding his desk than most of his health care colleagues. He served in the Navy as a medical officer, and now cares for veterans at a V.A. facility in Green Bay, Wisconsin. His 10-year-old son has required him to read all of the Oz and Unfortunate Events books aloud more than once, while his wife has filled the house and yard with animals of all kinds, including an undisclosed number of chickens. He’s published papers in medical and scientific journals, but Backward Burn is his first book for kids.

My 10-year-old son and I had a great time reading this book together. The plot moves quickly, and the characters develop nicely along the way. The readers in her house traditionally do not gravitate toward science fiction, but this book blends an equal amount of history and pop culture references that make it quite entertaining. We will definitely look forward to future books from this author.
